Position Overview: The ILS specialist will be responsible for teaching independent living skills to individuals receiving services so that they may gain independence and lead fulfilling lives. 

Responsibilities:

Teach Independent Living Skills to Consumers

  • Teach communication skills, community living and mobility, interpersonal skills, reduction/elimination of maladaptive behavior, self-care, and sensory/motor development involved in acquiring functional skills and any other skills deemed necessary by the individual's team.
  • Increase the person's independence by teach skills so tasks and activities may be performed with decreased dependence on caregivers.

Interact with Consumers

  • Talk to and interact with consumers respectfully; be knowledgeable of and sensitive to the consumer's style of communication.
  • Provide guidance, counseling and assistance in order to engage consumers in their home and community in ways that are relevant, purposeful and in tune with consumer choices, interests and outcomes.

Support Consumer Health and Well-Being

  • Document sessions with consumers as appropriate. Be thorough, complete professional and legible in your documentation.
  • As a mandated reporter, inform appropriate professionals of Vulnerable Adult issues.

Carry out home safety, meal preparation and cleaning procedures

  • Safety and Emergency Response
  • Educate and review safety procedures as well as fire evacuation and hazardous weather plans, with each consumer at minimum each quarter.
  • Meal Preparation and Food Handling
    • Assist consumers with meal planning, preparation and cleanup as needed
  • Assist consumers to maintain a safe, clean and orderly home
    • Assist consumers with home organization skills
    • Educate clients on maintaining a clean living space

Seek and follow the advice and directions of supervisors

  • Supervisors are in place to support you in your job. Please seek out their advice if you have questions regarding your job performance or how to handle a situation in which you may not know how to proceed.

Work effectively with coworkers

  • You must be a team player. When problems or emergencies arise, you must be willing and able to adapt to the needs of the group in the working environment.

Complete training, ongoing training, and meetings

  • Complete annual training regarding first aid, vulnerable adult training and additional trainings as required by your supervisor
  • Attend biweekly staff meetings
  • Assist as requested in training new employees

Maintain confidentiality and professionalism

  • Adhere to HIPAA laws regarding consumer's confidentiality. This also means refraining from discussing consumer personal issues in front of consumers and refraining from inappropriate comments or gossip.

Maintain a professional appearance

  • Maintain a professional appearance while on duty, including the use of professional language and postures as well as appropriate footwear and clean, neat clothing, jewelry and hairstyles.

Adhere to scheduling policies

  • You must be punctual and ready to start your shift at designated times. You must find your own replacements for scheduled shifts in accordance with company scheduling policies when you need time off due to illness, vacation or for other reasons. 

Drive personal vehicle

  • Transport consumers and perform job-related errands in your personal vehicle as requested and/or when necessary. Adhere to all safety requirements.  Mileage reimbursement is offered.

  • You must possess the following character traits:
  • Judgment: you must possess judgment and decision-making skills sufficient to perform the functions of the job, in both day-to-day and crisis situations.
  • Independence: you must be self-sufficient and resourceful enough to carry out the functions of the position.
  • Responsibility: You must be responsible in carrying out the functions of the position. You must be reliable in quality of work, attention to details, task completion and follow up.
  • Communication: you must be able to communicate effectively with clients, coworkers, supervisors, health care professionals and others related to your work.
  • Positive Tone and Morale: You must be able to contribute a positive tone and morale to the workplace in order to perform the functions of the position.
  • Empathy: you must understand the feelings of others. This character trait is critical in working effectively with consumers.
  • Self-control: Employees must be able to exercise and model self-control and self-discipline in their interactions with both consumers and coworkers sufficient to perform the functions of the job.
  • Socialization: You must be able to accept and conform to rules and regulations of the company and the position.
  • Stress tolerance: you must be able to function effectively under stressful conditions.
  • You must have a valid driver's license and your vehicle must have at least the minimum automobile insurance required by State law. You must be able to transport consumers and perform job-related errands in your personal vehicle.
  • You must have no record of DUI/DWI and no more than 2 moving violations and no more than one accident due to a violation in the last 36 months.
  • You must have reliable transportation to the work site.
  • You must refrain from smoking while on duty.
